Tip of the Week: Arsenal Digital Solutions, a relatively unsung but highly respected 10-year-old provider of data protection software and online storage services which already manages more than 20 petabytes of online data for its customers, will introduce a new, turnkey-type storage service called ViaBack RecoveryPlus on Nov. 26.
ViaBack RecoveryPlus gives a data center an additional storage tier using a small appliance that protects data on both disks and tape in any kind of server environment. Administrators decide what kinds of data goes to which level of storage, and the service does all the rest. It utilizes Data Domain’s well-regarded data deduplication secret sauce; Symantec-Veritas also has been a longtime partner, and its ingredients are also in the mix. SATA (serial ATA) disk support is also included.
ViaBack — even before RecoveryPlus was added — is a policy-driven data protection service aimed at enterprises and hosting/service providers. It’s been proven in the market for eight years by several thousand global enterprise customers and partners as a server backup, recovery and archive offering, Gerald Longoria, Arsenal’s VP of product marketing, told The Station from company headquarters in Cary, N.C.
The price breaks down to a very reasonable $4 to $5 per gigabyte stored (average, on a monthly basis), so that might be something for storage admins to consider, too. Go here for more info.
